Over the past few months I’ve been learning photography. I especially love landscapes as they help inspire me to write new music. Recently, I went to Jekyll Island with a couple friends to take some scenic pictures. Our goal was to focus on night photography and potentially catch a sunset or sunrise.
I didn’t realize just how difficult night photography is. Trying to find focus in the dark and high winds made it challenging to get sharp images with long exposures. But with lots of trial and error I was able to capture some magnificent shots.
The best part of the trip happened on our last night there. We were taking pictures inside this extremely old house made from seashells. It has no windows, doors or roof, but the walls are still standing. It’s very photogenic and lots of people use it for backdrop images in the day time. We wanted to get star trails from inside the building looking up at the sky.
Towards the end of our shoot and trolly pulls up with 30 or so people. Keep in mind it’s very late at night and completely pitch black. All these people got out and started to approach the building. So we quickly packed out cameras up and moved out of their way.
Joe and I were standing off to the side of the group when we realized it was a ghost tour. As the group was looking at the house and the tour leader was telling ghost stories, all of a sudden they started screaming and huddling together. I realized that our friend Robert was still inside the building. As he walked to the door they thought he was a ghost. When I realized what was happening I couldn’t help but laugh. Of course it didn’t take long for everyone to realize he was a real person. But the Chewbacca sound Robert made didn’t help!
All in all it was a fun trip. With a weekend in paradise and a condo right on the beach you can’t go wrong.
Until next time,
Rahn
